How Electrostatic Coating Works

From the perspective of electricity, abrasive is an insulator or dielectric. The so-called dielectric is composed of positive and negative charges connected in pairs. Under the influence of external conditions, the charge center produces relative displacement, and the positive and negative charges are concentrated at the two sharp ends of the long axis direction of the abrasive, showing two poles with equal charges. This is the polarization of the abrasive.(as shown in Figure 1).

The abrasive is polarized by the electric field, but it does not necessarily have the conditions for upward attraction. Only when the external electric field voltage is high enough, the charge on the surface of the abrasive will be partially discharged with the lower plate, making the abrasive a charged body. At this time, the abrasive will be attracted to the upper plate.

At this time, if a substrate with glue passes through the electrostatic field, the abrasive will overcome the viscous resistance of the glue layer, penetrate deeply into the glue layer and adhere to the substrate. Because the abrasive is "oriented" in the direction of the electric field lines, the tip of the abrasive faces outward, and because the abrasives repel each other, there are uniform gaps between the abrasives, so that the abrasive density is uniform and the grinding is sharp.

Figure 3 is a Microscopic diagram of abrasive adsorption. At this time, if there is no substrate coated with adhesive in the electric field, the abrasive will be sucked onto the upper plate and discharged immediately, then fall again, and then polarize again, discharge, and suck up, and the cycle continues.
